In 2015, dr. Dienke Hondius initiated The Mapping Hiding Places research project with the goal to bring, create and deepen knowledge and insight about the histories and legacy of hiding places used by Jews, Roma and Sinti during the Holocaust (Shoah) in Europe. It started with data collection in Amsterdam and the Netherlands, by students and faculty of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Faculty of Humanities, and grew into an international project. In 2022 the website was launched, with a rich and ever growing collection of insightful maps.
